Barcelona becomes a 5G Laboratory
Can you imagine walking through the city knowing you’re in the middle of a giant 5G “living laboratory”? That’s precisely what the 5G Barcelona Project aims to achieve. It’s a public-private initiative led by the Catalan Government (Generalitat), the City Council, Mobile World Capital, i2CAT, CTTC, Atos, and the UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia). The goal is to transform the metropolitan area into one of the main 5G hubs in Southern Europe.
The idea is clear: to deploy an open and neutral infrastructure. Both public administrations and companies, large and small, can validate real-world solutions with end users. In this way, Barcelona not only joins the 5G revolution but also becomes an epicenter of innovation and technology, attracting foreign investment, startups, and talent.
And it’s not just theory. Pilot projects have already been carried out in multiple sectors: healthcare, automotive, industry, entertainment, and security. Even in superblocks like Poblenou, where 5GCity conducted trials.
The idea is clear: deploy an open and neutral infrastructure. These antennas demonstrated exposure up to 195 times lower than legal limits. Furthermore, they offered a more stable and faster service thanks to Edge Computing.
Another key point is the carrier-neutral model, which allows antennas to be shared between companies. This avoids visual pollution, reduces costs, and closes the digital divide. It is an important step towards a more sustainable and efficient 5G network.
In short, the 5G Barcelona Project is transforming its streets into a vibrant ecosystem of innovation. Here, technology is not just a tool; it is a bridge between citizens, businesses, and government. All of this is aimed at fostering a more connected, equitable, and future-proof city.
